"Johny Johny Yes Pappa, Eating 'SALT'? NO PAPPA!" - New alert for good health!

"Johny Johny Yes Pappa, Eating SALT? NO PAPPA," this should the rhymes of the modern age. Salt is as harmful as sugar when the level exceeds the requirement. The clinical bottom line says: "Reducing salt intake by 3 g per day lowers blood pressure, but the effect is doubled with a 6 g per day reduction and tripled with a 9 g per day reduction."

Why is reduction of salt that necessary? Most of us feel that the food becomes more tastier with the increase in salt, but at a healthier lifestyle more salt more the problem. Increase in salt intake leads to hyper tension, which in turn leads to increase in cardiovascular disease. It was estimated that a reduction of 3 g/d in salt intake would lower blood pressure by 2.5/1.4 mmHg, which would reduce strokes by 12 to 14% and ischaemic heart disease by 9% to 10%.

So the next step is reduction in salt. Junk food, crispy chips, sauces have large amount of salt. It is better to avoid them. Cooking at home needs to be done with minimal amount of salt. Compromising taste for health is better than compromising health to taste. Do you agree with me?

Salt is essential to a healthy diet. We need about 1 g of salt a day. However, many of us consume about 10 g a day, ten times as much as we really need. A single dose of ten times that amount could be fatal! There is evidence that, for some people, too much salt can be a contributory factor to high blood pressure. Just how much is 'too much' varies from person to person. Prudent advice would be to reduce consumption to around 5 g per day.

While this subject can be very touchy for most people, my opinion is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do appreciate that youve added relevant and intelligent commentary here though. Thank you!Nisha Krishnaiah, DDS
